Hazel L. Smith, 69, of Newville, died Thursday, September 29, 2011, at the Swaim Health Center, Newville. She was born on Saturday, March 21, 1942, in Carlisle, a daughter of the late Laurie F. Smith and Bertha V. (Armold) Smith.

Hazel was a 1960 graduate of Big Spring High School, Newville. She was formerly employed with the Kinney Shoe Co., Sylvania Shoe Co., Ross, Howard Johnson and the Wal-Mart store in Carlisle.

Surviving Hazel are two sons; Kreig Smith of Shippensburg, and Urgan Smith of Newville, one daughter, Denise Shimkannon of Shippensburg, three brothers; Laurie Smith, Paul Smith and Eugene Smith, all of Newville, four sisters; Frances Oiler, Geraldine Smith and Marie Smith, all of Newville and Dorothy Molley of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, three grandchildren; Nathan Smith, Kristyn Smith and Felicia Shimkannon and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2011, at the Westminster Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, 1159 Newville Rd., Carlisle, with Pastor Bob Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens. There will be no viewing or visitation. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements.

She fought a good fight and was thinking about others till the very end. She even sent me a letter asking about my family the week before last. We worked together at Walmart, and I always enjoyed being with her. She was a nice lady and fun to be with. We will really miss her.
