Virginia Hughes Blackman, 88, of Carlisle, died
Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Carlisle Regional Medical Center. She was born on Friday, September 22, 1922, in Jersey City,
NJ, the daughter of the late Frank J. Hughes and Lucy (VonBiela) Hughes and the widow of Robert R. Blackman, who died Oct.
7, 1998.
Virginia was a 1940 graduate of Orange High School
and received her Bachelors degree from Newark State Teachers College in 1944. She also received her Masters degree from Seton
Hall University in 1975. Virginia retired after nearly 30 years of service as a second and third grade school teacher in New
Jersey. She taught at the Cleveland Street School in Orange, NJ and the Fairmont and Gregory Avenue schools in West Orange,
NJ. Virginia was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Carlisle.
She is survived by two sons; Lt. Gen. (Ret) Robert
R. Blackman, Jr., USMC of Norfolk, VA and Michael H. Blackman of Mechanicsburg, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services of Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated
at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at St. John's Episcopal Church, On the Square in Carlisle, with Rev. Dr. Mark
A. Scheneman and Rev. Marcia Wilkinson officiating. The family will receive friends for a time of fellowship immediately following
the services in the church parish hall. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Monroe Twp. at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011.
Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal
