Susan D. (Gruver) Pettit, 60, of Shippensburg, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill. She was born on Thursday, April 20, 1950, in Chambersburg, a daughter of the late Elmer B. and Ida Mae (Barnhart) Gruver and the widow of George H. Pettit, who died June 11, 2008.

Susan was a 1970 graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School. She was formerly employed in housekeeping with America’s Best Inn & Suites, Carlisle, and had also worked at several other area hotels. Susan was also a nurse’s aid for several area nursing homes, where she was a preceptor for many new aids. Susan was of protestant faith, a member of AARP, enjoyed writing short stories, painting pictures and listening to the Beatles.

She is survived by two sisters; Barbara E. Rodgers of Shippensburg and Marjorie R. (and her husband, Robert) Dougherty of Enola, three step-sons; George Scott Pettit of Carlisle, Brian James Pettit (and his wife, Jennifer) of Newville and Timothy Joseph Pettit of Shippensburg, two nephews; Robert Dougherty, Jr. and Shaun Dougherty and three step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Pastor Dale E. Barrick officiating. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Viewing will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of the services.
