Carl Lathaire Owens, 55, of Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He was born Oct. 13, 1954, in Carlisle and is the son of Donald E. Owens, Sr. of Carlisle and the late Isabel (Green) Owens.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his former wife, Renita D. Owens of Baton Rouge, LA, two daughters; Carlita R. (and her husband, Nasser) Eggleston of Upper Darby and Dyan S. Owens of Wilmington, DE, one son, Joseph P. Owens of Baton Rouge, LA, two grandsons; Keyon L. Owens-Christopher of Upper Darby and Kyle L. Owens of Baton Rouge, LA, six sisters and three brothers; Harriet A. Hodge, William H. Owens, Sarah E. Horn, Emma L. Carothers, and Cheryl A. Knight, all of Carlisle, Albert D. Owens of Frederick, MD, Donald E. Owens, Jr. of Quincy, ME, Roxann O. Creamer of Martinsburg, WV and Donna M. Daughtry of College Station, TX and a host of relatives and friends.

Carl was a 1972 graduate of Carlisle High School and was a part of athletics in many ways. During high school, he was a part of District Championships in various sports. In track and field, he specialized in discus and other throwing events throughout the 1960's and held the record for discus throw well into the 1990's. Later, he became a PIAA referee and could be seen making the calls at various boys and girls sports across central PA. He attended University of Utah on a football scholarship. Carl then served in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Later, he earned an Associate Degree in social services from Harrisburg Area Community College and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa.

Carl had worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 10 years and then began working for the PA Department of Welfare with the Cumberland County Assistance Office and was currently employed with the South Mountain Secure Treatment Facility, where he was a therapeutic activities coordinator.

Funeral services to celebrate Carl’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Carlisle Alliance Church, 237 E. North St., Carlisle, with Revs. Duane Coleman, Kenneth Newman and Walter Reed officiating. Viewing will be held from 1 p.m. until time of the services on Saturday. The family will also receive friends immediately following the services on Saturday at the church for a time of fellowship. Burial with military honors will held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, August 2, 2010, in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made in Carl’s name to the Carlisle Alliance Church. "If life is sacred it should not be allowed to perish". "We are not dead until we're forgotten."

I can recall a locker room scene back at the old Lamberton building.  Carl was maybe 14 yrs old.  He was getting out of his football uniform and equipment.  He still had his shoulder pads on.  Somebody said something, and he burst out laughing.  It was a loud and fun laugh.  I won't forget that laugh.  It's as fresh in my mind as though it happened yesterday.

I have worked with Carl for almost 2 years at South Mountain Secure Treatment Unit.  I will remember him as a very friendly, personable individual with a passion for working with youth. He always had a smile on his face and a story to share with everyone. He will be sadly missed by all.

I worked with Carl at the Cumberland CAO. He was very humble and never shared of all his lifetime accomplishments. He was very kind man, with a good sense of humor, who spoke very highly of his family.  I was sad to see him leave our office but knew he would be a positive influence on the kids at South Mountain. My sincerest sympathy to the entire Owens family.  Your loss is shared by everyone who ever met Carl.  He was a strong confident man who could be counted on.  I remember Carl as a high school basketball player who I looked up to and later as one of the alumni that Coach Evans had in the gym to teach us younger guys what being tough was all about.  Carl was a fierce competitor who I greatly admired.  I feel lucky to have known him and learned from him.  May he have eternal peace.

 Just found out about the passing of Carl.
He was my main man!!!
I was the radio announcer on 102.3 WHYL during the great Carlisle basketball era (1985-88) as the Herd won 4 consecutive state titles with the help of Carl's nephew Billy.
Last time I saw Carl was late March at Chambersburg HS for the boys "AAAA" state semi-final game.
It was always great talking sports with him.
My prayers are with the Owens family.
