Hastings A. Ewing
Hastings A. Ewing was born in Carlisle on January 14, 1866.
He graduated from the public schools of Carlisle in 1883. Hastings learned the trade of cabinetmaking from his father A.B.
and served an apprenticeship under him. Under the careful guidance of his father, he began his business career. Both Hastings
and A.B. took great pride in the high class of their work. In 1893, while attending and directing a funeral, A.B. met with
an accident which practically ended his personal supervision of his business. His son, Hastings, stepped quietly and modestly
into his place, and afterward practically conducted the entire establishment, which he continued to carry on after his father's
death. On December 6, 1888, Hastings married Effie DeLancey. Together they had four children: Alexander B., one that
died in infancy in 1892, Mary E., and William Joseph. Both Hastings and his wife were members of the St. John's Episcopal
Church. He was a member of the Lodge No. 91, I.O.O.F., of which he is past grand; the K.G.E., No. 110, in which he was
the past chief; the Mystic Circle and to Tent No. 403, K.O.T.M., Carlisle. He was also a member of the Union Fire Co. of Carlisle
and the Southern District Funeral Directors' Association. He was very popular socially in the community of Carlisle. Hastings
died June 14, 1924. He is buried in Ashland Cemetery.
