Jean L. Garner, 88, of Carlisle, passed
away on Thursday, January 10, 2019 at UPMC-Pinnacle Carlisle. She was born on July 31, 1930 in Huntingdon
and was a daughter of the late Wilbur A. and Hazel (Gahagan) Shields. Her devoted husband of 59 years,
Melvin Ralph Garner, passed away on April 11, 2018.
Mrs. Garner is survived by two devoted
daughters, Bonnie Chestnut and husband, Barry, of Newville, and Judy Austin and husband, Neil, of Carlisle. She
is also survived by a sister, Lois K. Oestreich and husband, William H. of Petersburg and a nephew, Adam L. Oestreich and
companion, Kimberly Bet of Baltimore.
Mrs. Garner and her husband had opened
their home to and cared for a total of twelve foster children for a number of years. She also did the bookkeeping
for her husband's electrical business for 21 years and in later years worked at Fry Communications and Dickinson College
catering. She was a 1948 graduate of Huntingdon High School. She enjoyed volunteering
at the Holy Spirit Hospital, Cumberland Valley Schools, the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, and the Williams Grove Steam Engine
Association. She also enjoyed crocheting and quilted beautiful pillow tops. Mrs. Garner was a member of
Hickorytown United Methodist Church, Carlisle. Mrs. Garner was a veteran of the United States Air Force
having served during the Korean War.
A viewing will be held from 6:00 p.m.
to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 14, 2019 in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle. Funeral
services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 in the John B. Brown Funeral Home, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon
with Rev. Joe Barrett officiating. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 12:00 noon
until time of services. Burial with military honors will be in the White Church Cemetery in Hesston. www.Since1853.com
