Melvin R. “Mel” Garner, 91, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 in ManorCare
Health Services, Carlisle. He was born on June 10, 1926 in Hesston, PA and was the son of the late Melvin
Clyde Garner and Olive (Norris) Garner.
Mel was a US Navy veteran of WWII. He
was a retired electrician in the Carlisle area and operated his own business for more than 21 years. He
was a member of Hickorytown United Methodist Church, Carlisle. Mel was a member of the Williams Grove Historical
Steam Engine Association and the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 59
years, Jean L. (Shields) Garner, two daughters; Judy (and her husband, Neil) Austin of Carlisle and Bonnie (and her husband,
Barry) Chestnut of Newville, one sister, Helen Myers of Hesston and his good friend and great employee, Steve (and his wife,
Linda) Patterson. Mel was preceded in death by two sisters; Catherine Myers and Beulah Felton.
A
viewing will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16, 2018 in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover
St., Carlisle. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17
