Eileen (Kirwan) Markel, 80, of Wexford, PA passed away peacefully November 2, 2017, in the home she shared with her son and daughter in law.  A long-time resident of Carlisle PA, Eileen was born in Portlaw, County Waterford Ireland to the late Edward Kirwan and Helen Nolan Kirwan.  She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 48 years, Gene A. Markel, son, Kevin H Markel, grandson, Sean K Markel, sisters; Essie O’Shea and Nora Malone and brother, Paddy Kirwan.

Eileen is survived by her adoring family; son, Barry E. Markel and his wife Michelle, of Wexford PA, daughter in law, Nina Markel of Carlisle, PA, grandchildren; Jason (Kaitlyn) Markel, Kelly (Nate) Markel, Kimberly (Pete) Masarik, Jordan Grega, Conner Markel, great grandchildren; Colin and Adeline Masarik, as well as sister, Julie Foley, brother, David Kirwan, both of London England and many nieces and nephews.

After being married in Ireland, Eileen emigrated to the United States in 1956 and became a naturalized US citizen.  She moved to Carlisle in 1967 after her husband joined the staff at the US Army War College, living a happy and fulfilling life in the town she would proudly come to call home. Her life centered around her family, her friends and her church, St John’s Episcopal on the Square; where she developed countless lifelong friendships that endured until the day she joined God’s eternal kingdom.  Always beautiful and impeccably dressed, Eileen had great wit and intelligence, matched by an easy charm and grace.  She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

Memorial service arrangements are pending.  Eileen will be inurned in the St. John’s Episcopal Church Columbarium, Carlisle.  Memorial donations may be made in Eileen’s name to St John’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 612, Carlisle, PA 17013.

I knew Eileen for many years through St. John's Church.  She was a lovely, gracious, warm person.  I am glad my life intersected with hers.

Jean (Booth) Rankin, now of MA

Dearest Markel Family, We so loved and enjoyed Eileen. Her devotion to all of you is remarkable and something to be admired. We  can see Eileen and Gene  listening and dancing to big band music.

Connie and George Allport

To the Gumby Family,
I shall surely miss going out to see her and her wonderful SMILE.  Her face lit up when we would talk about JESUS. God
picked a FLOWER for his GARDEN.
