Barbara R. Benfer Smith, 92 of Carlisle, passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2017 in Chapel Pointe at Carlisle.  She was born on Saturday, August 16, 1924 in Loysville, and was the daughter of the late George B. and Margaret C. (Reapsome) Reed.

Barbara was a 1943 graduate of the former Blain High School.  She graduated from Central Penn Business School after which she went to work for the PSEA in Harrisburg.  She retired in 1991 as a secretary for the Carlisle Area School District after more than 20 years of service.  She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carlisle.  As a young person, she was very involved in 4H and enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening throughout her life.

She is survived by one son, David (wife, Elena) Benfer of Reading, two daughters; Susan Trimmer of Carlisle and Peggy (husband, Tom) Jones of South Bend, IN, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond F. Benfer, Jr., her brother, Glenn Reed and son-in-law, C. Martin Trimmer.

A viewing will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2017 followed by the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. in the Henry Chapel at Chapel Pointe, 770 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Steven Motter officiating.  Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Chapel Pointe Benevolent Fund.  Visit www.Since1853.com to send condolences.
