Ruth
E. Thumma, 96, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at her home. She was born on November
22, 1920 in Green Twp., Franklin County, and was a daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison Mackey and Clara Belle (Evans) Mackey
and was the widow of Mervin S. “Ike” Thumma, who died March 23, 1999. Ruth was a loving homemaker and farmer’s wife.
She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carlisle. Ruth enjoyed cooking, spending
time with her grandchildren, doing jigsaw puzzles and reading. She is survived by one son, Ronald R. (and wife, Dorothy) Thumma of Millersburg,
one daughter, Nancy L. (and husband, Raymond) Ewanek with whom she lived, five grandchildren; Javette Thumma, David (wife,
Kathy) Thumma, Todd Thumma, Richard (wife, Dawn) Bear and Scott Bear, seven great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren,
one great-great-granddaughter, many nieces, nephews and one sister-in-law, Romaine Mackey of Carlisle. Ruth
was predeceased by seven brothers; Walter, Russell, Charles, Arthur, Raymond, Frank and Thomas Mackey and three sisters; Edna
Heller, Helen Salisbury and Viola Kramer.
A viewing will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 followed by funeral services
at 2:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Pastor Rob Moore officiating.
Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Memorial contributions in Ruth’s

Nancy, Raymond and family: So sorry to hear of your mothers passing, Nancy. She was a
wonderful example of the pure joy embodied every time she chose to put one of her wonderful dishes on the table! I will always
remember her culinary perfections and sweet personality. She will be missed. My thoughts will be with you in these next
weeks and months.
