Adele C. ‘Joy’ Hess, 89, of Ashburn, VA and formerly of Baltimore, MD and Rehoboth Beach, DE,
passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 in the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Virginia. She was born on August
1, 1927 in Cambridge, England, and was a daughter of the late Leslie G. and Rhoda E. D. (Sol) Francis. Adele
was the widow of Major (Ret) James M. Hess, U. S. Army, who died May 29, 1980. Adele was schooled in England
and was a devoted and loving homemaker and Army wife. She enjoyed sewing and later in her life she worked
as a seamstress for a privately owned department store. Adele was of Episcopalian faith.
She is survived by one son, Kevin Hess and his wife Connie of Carlisle, three daughters;
Lesley Desautels of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Karla Cook and her husband Kevin of Herndon, VA and Jill Desautels and fiancée
Darrel Risberg of Denver, CO, one brother, Julian Francis of England, eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews. Adele was predeceased by one brother, Jeremy Francis.
A visitation will begin at
9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 28, 2016 followed by the Burial Eucharist service at 10:30 a.m. in the St. John’s Episcopal
Church, 1 N. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. David S. Bateman officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland
Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of the arrangements.
