
Donald E. Owens, Sr., 84, of Carlisle, went home to be with the Lord on
Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at his home. He was born on Sept. 1, 1930 in Carlisle, a son of the late Benjamin
Myoli Owens and Sarah E. Gumby, and was married to the late Isabel (Green) Owens, who died June 15, 2001. Don
was affectionately known as “Pot Roast”. He retired after many years of service with P.P.G.
Industries, Carlisle, and had also worked 20 years at the former Duffy-Motts Canning Factory in Aspers. He
was a member of the West Street A. M. E. Zion Church, Carlisle. Don was an avid sports fan and had followed
the “Dodgers” for most of his life.
He is survived
by three sons; William H. (wife, Marsha) Owens of Carlisle, Albert D. (wife, Quale) Owens of Snyder, TX and Donald E. “Hook”
Owens, Jr. of Carlisle, six daughters; Harriet A. Hodge of Carlisle, Sarah E. Horn of Carlisle, Donna M. Daughtry of College
Station, TX, Emma L. (husband, Charles) Carrothers of Carlisle, Roxann M. Creamer of Martinsburg, WV and Cheryl A. (husband,
Lesman) Knight of Carlisle, two sisters; Judy Owens of Brick, NJ and Sharon Owens of Philadelphia, 41 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren,
13 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, one sister-in-law, Geraldine Owens of Carlisle and one
uncle; Milton A. Thompson of Carlisle. Don was predeceased by one son, Carl L. Owens, one brother, Robert L. Owens and one
sister, Gwendolyn Diggs.
A Going Home Service will be held on Friday,
August 21, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Vernol Hazel, Jr. officiating.
A viewing will be held on Thursday evening from 6 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment
will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Memorial donations in Don’s name may be
made to his church, 136 South West Street, Carlisle, PA.
