James R. Scott, 86, of Carlisle, died on Monday, July 20, 2015 at Sarah Todd Memorial
Home, Carlisle. He was the son of the late Malcolm J. Scott and Oella Liggett Scott. Born
April 30, 1929 in Oxford, he graduated from Carlisle High School in 1946, Overbrook School for the Blind, and Ursinus College.
He became the owner of C.M. Liggett Insurance Agency after the death of his grandfather, C.M. Liggett.
Although blind at a very young age, he never saw himself as being handicapped. He was very independent,
and went on to become a successful businessman in insurance, real estate, and property investment. Many
people may have recognized him in the community walking with one of his six loyal Seeing Eye dogs. He was
a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Carlisle. He was also a lifetime member of B.P.O.E
#578, as well as several other social organizations. Jim is survived by his wife
of 62 years, Helen I. (Summy) Scott, one son, Jeffrey L. Scott and wife, Janet of Carlisle; one daughter, Sally S. Hamilton
and husband, Dean of Evans City; four grandchildren; Jessica McGuinness of Mars, David Hamilton of Renfrew, Hunter and Haley
Scott of Carlisle and three great-grandchildren, Bella and Silas Hamilton and Grady McGuinness. He is also
survived by a sister, Jane Gilchrist of Zelienople and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Carlisle Elks, 120 W. Ridge St.,
Carlisle, as we want to remember Jim as the vibrant, humorous, affable man prior to his stroke in 2006. Rev.
Lisa M. Leber will officiate the service. Ewing Brothers Funeral Home is assisting the family with the
arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 N. Pitt
St., Carlisle or to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 21 S. Bedford St., Carlisle or a charity of your choice.
