Joseph R. Reed, 90, of Carlisle, died Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Claremont Nursing Center, Carlisle.  He was born Sept. 24, 1924 in Monroe County, WV, a son of the late Dawson C. and Hattie M. (Vass) Reed.  Joe was married to the late June M. (Sheesley) Reed, who died Oct. 5, 1998.

Joe was a 1943 graduate of Union High School in Monroe County, WV.  He served with the US Army’s 28th Infantry Division in Europe during WWII and earned many honors which included; the Combat Infantry Badge, the Silver Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and five Bronze Stars.  Joe retired from I.B.M. Corp. after 33 years of service with inventory control and was a Past President of the IBM Quarter Century Club.  He was a member of Carlisle First Church of God, and was involved with many organizations as a volunteer which included; the Carlisle Hospital (20 years), Carlisle Hospital Follies (7 shows) and the United Way in many capacities.  Joe was an Old Timer member of the Carlisle Elks Lodge, a Past Exalted Ruler and was formerly involved with the Elk Players in 15 shows for Cerebral Palsy.  He was a member of the Carlisle Exchange Club and was also a former active member of many of the social clubs in the Carlisle area.

He is survived by several nieces, nephews and his companion of five years, Peggy E. Zeigler of Carlisle.  He was predeceased by brothers; Clayton, Myles and Orr and sisters; Mabel and Alma.

A viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2015 followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle.  Pastor Greg Hench will officiate.  Interment with military honors by Cumberland County Honor Guard will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.  www.Since1853.com.

My Uncle Joe; a great and caring man. We may have lived a great distance apart from each other, but he was always in our lives, and meant so much to all of us!
