Betty Jean (Dunkle) Shughart, 90, of Carlisle, died on Tuesday, February 25, 2014, at her daughter’s home in Carlisle.  She was born on November 17, 1923, in Harrisburg, a daughter of the late Clark C. Dunkle, Jr. and Mildred Ruth (Rhinesmith) Dunkle.  She was the widow of Leonard E. Shughart, who died June 17, 1989 and had also been married to the late William N. Alspaugh.

Betty attended Carlisle High School and was formerly employed at the Carlisle Kinney Shoe Store, the Carlisle Garment Factory and at the Carlisle Barracks in the Tailor Shop and at the Post Exchange.  Betty was also the previous owner of the original West End Tavern in Carlisle.  She was of the Lutheran faith all of her life and a member of AA for 37 years.

She is survived by two daughters; Kathy Jane Alspaugh Baer Gruver of Carlisle and Tina Louise Shughart Whitsell with whom Betty lived, one sister, Alyce Faye Dunkle Mayberry of Carlisle, a half-brother, Clark C. Dunkle, III of Carlisle, seven grandchildren; Jeff Baer, Jason and Brian Alspaugh, Abigale, Hannah, Alexander and Michael Whitsell, four great-grandchildren; Amanda Armolt, Jessica Baer, Joseph Alspaugh, Triston Armolt and soon to be born, Trent Alspaugh, one great-great-granddaughter, Jasmine Armolt, one step-son, Ronald Shughart, two step-daughters; Janice Shughart Hippensteel and Ann Shughart Mountz.  She was predeceased by one son, William R. Alspaugh and one great-granddaughter, Stephanie Baer.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at 2 p.m. in the Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle, with Rev. Arlene Dunn officiating.  There will be a private family viewing.  Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements.  Memorial contributions may be made to Celtic Hospice and Home Health, 220 Wilson St., Ste. 100, Carlisle, PA 17013.
