Harvey H. McCommon, 89, of Carlisle, died on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.  He was born on Jan. 24, 1925, in Carlisle, a son of the late John L. and Anna Mae (Jumper) McCommon.

Harvey graduated in 1944 from Boiling Springs High School.  He retired from Dickinson College after 21 years of service.  He was a longtime member of Carlisle United Methodist Church, where he was a faithful volunteer.  He was a member of AARP Carlisle Chapter 4377 and an honorary member of Omicron Delta Kappa – The National Leadership Honor Society.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Lois L. (Kurtz) McCommon, two sons; Michael S. (wife, Jana) McCommon, Carlisle and John T. McCommon, Nokesville, VA, two daughters; Patricia M. (husband, Charles) Miller of Pittsburgh and Sharon K. (husband, Robert) Surfield of Carlisle, eight grandchildren; Stephen, Christine, Audrey and Jonathan Miller, Laura and Jessica McCommon and Shane and Nicholas Surfield and many nieces and nephews.  Harvey was predeceased by four brothers; John, Samuel, William and Mervin McCommon and three sisters; Elizabeth Walterick, Anna Rider and Edna Howard and one infant grandson, Joseph.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at 1 p.m. in Carlisle United Methodist Church, 45 S. West St., Carlisle, with Rev. James VanZandt officiating.  A visitation will follow the service at the church.  Burial will be private.  Ewing Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  Memorial contributions may be made to Carlisle United Methodist Church, 45 S. West Str., Carlisle or to the Benevolent Fund at Chapel Pointe at Carlisle, 770 S. Hanover Str., Carlisle, PA 17013.
