Elvina Reyes Rios, 85, of Agat,
Guam, spent her last days in Carlisle, PA surrounded by her loving family, went peacefully home to be with her Lord on the
evening of Friday, February 7, 2014. Born on May 28, 1928, in Agat, Guam, a daughter of Andres and Maria
(Chaco) Reyes; Elvina was a dear and kind lady; a caring wife, devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother; and totally
dedicated to loving her family and her Lord. A War Survivor of the World War II Japanese occupation of the
island of Guam, Elvina’s inner strength, faith and perseverance saw her through two and a half years of war as a teenager.
Better known as “Mama Rios” by the sailors of her Navy Family, Elvina retired in 1989 as the Civilian Food Service
Foreman for the Guam Naval Station Enlisted Dining Facility. In addition, Elvina was continuously recognized
for her outstanding contributions of time and talent to the religious communities of the Guam Naval Station and Mount Carmel
Church of Agat, Guam. She is survived by three daughters, Lynn O’Connor (Rick) of Rancho
Cucamonga, CA; Juvy Semrow of Lake Zurich, IL; and Laura Jean Rios of Lacy, WA; six sons, Andrew Rios, Paul Rios and Gary
Rios of Guam; SFC (Ret) Edward Rios, US Army (and his wife, COL (Ret) Ronda Urey, US Army) of Carlisle, PA; William Rios (Christie)
of WA; and John Rios (Betsy) of Yelm, WA;; two sisters, Carmen Aguigui of TX and Rosa Meno of Guam; 32
grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Elvina was preceded in death by her
husband of 40 years, Juan Salas Rios, US Navy Retired; two sons, Joe Rios and Arthur Rios; two daughters, Annie Sablan and
Melva Rios and two sisters and three brothers. Mass of Christian Burial will
be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the St. Patrick Shrine Church, 152 E. Pomfret St., Carlisle with the
Rev. William C. Forrey officiating. A viewing will be at the church from 10 a.m. until time of services.
Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be at a later date
in Agat Cemetery, Guam. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick Church, 152 E. Pomfret St., Carlisle,
PA 17013 or Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17110.
