A War Survivor of the World War II Japanese occupation of the island of Guam, Elvina’s inner strength, faith and perseverance saw her through two and a half years of war as a teenager. Better known as “Mama Rios” by the sailors of her Navy Family, Elvina retired in 1989 as the Civilian Food Service Foreman for the Guam Naval Station Enlisted Dining Facility.  In addition, Elvina was continuously recognized for her outstanding contributions of time and talent to the religious communities of the Guam Naval Station and Mount Carmel Church of Agat, Guam.

She is survived by three daughters, Lynn O’Connor (Rick) of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Juvy Semrow of Lake Zurich, IL; and Laura Jean Rios of Lacy, WA; six sons, Andrew Rios, Paul Rios and Gary Rios of Guam; SFC (Ret) Edward Rios, US Army (and his wife, COL (Ret) Ronda Urey, US Army) of Carlisle, PA; William Rios (Christie) of WA; and John Rios (Betsy) of Yelm, WA;; two sisters, Carmen Aguigui of TX and  Rosa Meno of Guam; 32 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, Elvina was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Juan Salas Rios, US Navy Retired; two sons, Joe Rios and Arthur Rios; two daughters, Annie Sablan and Melva Rios and two sisters and three brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the St. Patrick Shrine Church, 152 E. Pomfret St., Carlisle with the Rev. William C. Forrey officiating.  A viewing will be at the church from 10 a.m. until time of services.  Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, is in charge of arrangements.  Burial will be at a later date in Agat Cemetery, Guam.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick Church, 152 E. Pomfret St., Carlisle, PA  17013 or Hospice of Central PA, 1320 Linglestown Rd., Harrisburg, PA 17110.
