Katherine E. Stipes, 88, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Thornwald Home, Carlisle.  She was born March 6, 1925, in Broken Bow, NE, a daughter of the late Eugene L and Alvina F. (Graf) Plumb and was the widow of Col. (Ret) Clarence O. Stipes, US Army, who died in 1990.

Katherine was a 1942 graduate of Broken Bow High School.  She served in the United States Coast Guard and was a veteran of WWII.  Katherine retired from the Carlisle Barracks in 1986 after 20 years of service, where she was a purchaser in the Medical Supplies Department.  Katherine was always busy and enjoyed working around her home and gardening.

She is survived by one son, Dr. Craig R. Rice of Carlisle, two brothers; Fred Plumb of Broken Bow, NE and Eugene Plumb of Los Angeles, CA, one granddaughter, Amy (and her husband, Brian) Wight of Atlanta, GA, a dear longtime friend, Wendy Wolf of Carlisle and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Jeff Gibelius officiating.  Burial will be in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.  A visitation will be held Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services.  Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.

As I think back, remembering your Mom, I can still see her beautiful smile. She was always so warm and welcoming, and always had a kind word for everyone. What a very dear lady.
